PFAS

Grand Rapids Public Utilities wants you to be aware of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), the "forever chemicals" hidden in everyday items. These resilient substances pose risks to our health and environment. Found in things like non-stick cookware, water-repellent clothing, and certain food packaging, PFAs never break down completely. Make safer choices by opting for PFA-free products and supporting regulations to limit their use.

What are PFAS?

PFAS are manufactured chemicals that have been used in industry and consumer products since the 1940s. Because of their widespread use and their persistence in the environment, many PFAS are found in the blood of people and animals all over the world. There are thousands of different PFAS, some of which have been more widely used and studied than others.
