Grand Rapids Public Utilities has partnered with Service Line Warranties of America (SLWA) to offer protection for homeowners for external sanitary Sewer lines. The coverage is voluntary and available at affordable monthly or annual prices. This program is offered at no cost to the City, and no public funds are used to promote or administer the program.
The Grand Rapids Public Utilities (GRPU) operates and maintains the sanitary sewer collection system that serves all properties within the City and certain rural areas. The GRPU performs regular, routine preventative maintenance on its sanitary sewer lines to help ensure they remain in good working condition.
Property owners often don’t realize, however, that the sanitary sewer pipes located on their property are their responsibility. That means the property owner is responsible for clearing any blockages in that line. Many homes and businesses have lines that are decades old, and those lines won’t last forever. Many factors such as age, root intrusion, and weather contribute to the life expectancy of those pipes, and it’s important to GRPU to help homeowners find affordable protection for their own private aging infrastructure.
The SLWA Service Line Warranty Program protects against leaks and breaks due to normal wear and tear, age, ground shifting, and tree root intrusion. If a customer’s line is in need of repair, a simple call to the SLWA 24-hour hotline will dispatch a local, licensed contractor familiar with local code. The program provides up to $4,000 per incident for external sanitary sewer line repairs with an additional allowance for public sidewalk cutting. There are no annual or lifetime limits, service fees, or deductibles – just protection when you need it most!
