LEGAL CANNABIS USE - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

As defined in MN 342.01, newly enacted state law legalized adult-use of cannabis and went into effect on August 1, 2023. The 155-page bill is complex and brings layers of change to the MN Drug Statutes. Such state law allowed for individual cities to adopt an ordinance for a person who unlawfully uses cannabis flower, cannabis products, lower-potency hemp edibles, or hemp-derived consumer products in a public place. State law drastically limited local governments’ ability to place additional restrictions on adult citizens’ use of cannabis.

On August 14, 2023, GR City Council approved Grand Rapids City Ord 23-08-04. The local ordinance complies with language provided by the State and solely focuses on public use of cannabis. The local ordinance now establishes that a public use violation will result in a petty misdemeanor.
