Grand Rapids named one of the best Minnesota cities to spend retirement

Grand Rapids was named to the list of top ten cities in Minnesota to retire by SmartAsset, a financial technology company.  The city was recognized for its wealth of recreational and social opportunities for retirees.

“It’s always exciting to be recognized.  We’re proud of what Grand Rapids has to offer our senior citizens, and, as evidenced by the collaborative efforts that brought a new senior center to the Itasca YMCA, we are continuing to look at new ways to serve our senior population,” said Community Development Director Rob Mattei.

The ranking was based on regional factors that affect the quality of life for retirees, including income and sales taxes, access to medical care, access to recreation and retirement centers, and the percentage of seniors living in the area.

Grand Rapids excels in the area of recreation centers, showing a recreation and social index of 96.00, and enjoys income and sales tax amounts equal to the average Minnesota city.
