Orchestras @yourlibrary

By Amy Dettmer, Assistant Library Director

I was perusing the visitgrandrapids.com website and came across a free event scheduled for this week. The Concordia Orchestra from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN, will present a joint concert with the Itasca Youth Chamber Orchestra. The concert is sponsored by the Itasca Orchestra and Strings Program, The Reif Performing Arts Center, Edward Jones (Kristina Gaalaas) and St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church. The concert is open to the public free of charge. The concert is Wednesday, October 30, at 7:00 p.m. in the Wilcox Theatre at the Reif Performing Arts Center.

This concert is part of the orchestra’s 2019 regional tour which also includes stops in Alexandria, Bemidji, Duluth and Stillwater, MN, and Grand Forks, N.D.

If you want to get prepped for the concert by learning more about orchestras or maybe attend the concert and then learn more, the library can help! Check out these titles! Note: not all titles available at the Grand Rapids Area Library. Some have to be requested.

“Encyclopedia of music: instruments of the orchestra and the great composers” by Max Wade-Matthews. A comprehensive encyclopedia of musical instruments, covering all sections of the orchestra as well as information about 100 composers.

“A History of Western Music” by Peter Burkholder. Includes a lot of information about western music starting with ancient times to the 1970s.

“Those Amazing Musical Instruments!: Your Guide to the Orchestra through Sounds and Stories” by Genevieve Helsby. A guide to the orchestra, from the cello to the timpani through sounds and stories.

“The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” by Anita Ganeri. Provides information about the history of the orchestra since its beginnings in the 17th century, instruments of the orchestra, and famous composers of classical music.
