420 N. POKEGAMA AVENUE

Outstanding Friends @ your Library

Will Richter, Director

I am pleased to announce the Friends of the Grand Rapids Area Library are winners of the Evy Nordley Award for their wildly successful Pop-Up Book Sale Concept!

The Evy Nordley Award is the Minnesota Association of Library Friends flagship prize. Its namesake, Evy Nordley, devoted decades to championing Friends of the Library. She did so as head of the Washington County Friends, a director of Friends of Library USA (now United for Libraries), and a founder of the Minnesota Association of Library Friends.

Throughout her “second career,” Nordley pushed Friends to step out of their traditional comfort zone and explore new and promising initiatives. Moreover, she practiced what she preached. Under the auspices of the Minnesota Humanities Commission, Nordley brought to life a hugely popular “Minnesota Chautauqua” programming series driven by Friends and other state humanities organizations.

After Nordley’s passing in 1997, MALF created the Evy Nordley Award to recognize the commitment to Friends and appetite for replicable innovation that she exemplified.

Common project types are special events, successful fundraisers, membership drives, and advocacy campaigns – but the sky is the limit!

About Friends of the Grand Rapids Area Library

Mission Statement:

To support the needs, improvements, and programs of the library and serve as a strong voice for the library in the community.

Who We Are:

Friends of the Library is a non-profit organization which provides on-going service and financial support to our Public Library.

We believe that the Public Library is one of our community's greatest assets.

We operate informally and respond to needs of the library.

What We Do:

Our focus is on financial support for books, materials and activities of the Public Library, especially for the Children's Section.

We have also contributed to support of the Library in other ways including contributions toward Internet Software, construction of the new Area Library and support of the Library Foundation.

The Executive Board meets from 4-6 times yearly to oversee the Used Bookstore, plan for programs, activities and the Annual meeting, and to respond to needs of the Library.

Funds are generated from a used bookstore, book bag sales and donations from members of Friends.

We are separate from the Library Board and the Library Foundation but support their efforts toward excellence in Public Library Service.

If you would like to get involved or have ideas for Friends of the Library, please leave a note with the Reference Librarian who will forward it to the Friends of the Library Board. Or you can email us at grlibraryfriends@yahoo.com.
