World War II Shipbuilding in Duluth and Superior

Jerry Sandvick

The Allied victory in World War II was highly dependent on enough cargo vessels to carry war goods across the globe. Hear from author, Jerry Sandvick, as he discusses how—in Duluth and Superior—five shipyards grew from almost nothing in 1939 to industries employing thousands of men and women in 1945. Some 200 ships were launched by the Twin Ports yards and made the 2,400 mile passage to the oceans. It is a fascinating but not well-known part of our history during that crucial era.
