2013 WINNER of UNITED FOR LIBRARIES NATIONAL

LIBRARY FRIENDS WEEK AWARD!

Mission Statement:

  • The mission of the Friends of the Grand Rapids Area Library is to support the library and staff, the library's mission, and to enhance the library's resources and services.

Who We Are:

  • Friends of the Library is a non-profit organization which provides on-going service and financial support to our Public Library.
  • We believe that the Public Library is one of our community's greatest assets.
  • We operate informally and respond to needs of the library.

What We Do:

  • Our focus is on financial support for books, materials and activities of the Public Library, especially for the Children's Section.
  • We have also contributed to support of the Library in other ways including contributions toward Internet Software, construction of the new Area Library and support of the Library Foundation.
  • The Executive Board meets from 4-6 times yearly to oversee the Used Bookstore, plan for programs, activities and the Annual meeting, and to respond to needs of the Library.
  • Funds are generated from a used bookstore, book bag sales and donations from members of Friends.
  • We are separate from the Library Board and the Library Foundation but support their efforts toward excellence in Public Library Service.

Fundraising:

  • BOOK BAGS
Friends of the Library offers sturdy tote bags for $8. They are imprinted with the library's name and phone number. Funds raised by the sale of the bags support ongoing activities of the Friends of the Library. Stop at the Children's Section and ask the staff to show you one.

  • MEMBERSHIP
Membership contributions of $5, $10 or $15 can be left with the Library staff or dropped in the Money Depository in the Used Bookstore. Envelopes for leaving your contribution are available at the Checkout Desk. Checks should be made out to Friends of the Grand Rapids Area Library. We have a link to the Membership Form which you can print and complete.

  • USED BOOKSTORE
Friends of the Library recycles used books through the Bookstore at the Area Library. Anyone can bring in gently used books, magazines and videos. These will be placed in the Bookstore.
Buyers can browse the store anytime the Library is open. They may pick out choices and leave money for them in the drop box provided in the store. Money donated for used materials is recycled to program support for the Library.

If you would like to get involved or have ideas for Friends of the Library, please leave a note with the Reference Librarian who will forward it to the Friends of the Library Board. Or you can email us at grlibraryfriends@yahoo.com.

Contributions to either the Library Foundation or to the Friends of the Library, or directly to the Grand Rapids Area Library itself, can qualify for tax deductions, according to Internal Revenue Service rules.
