Music of Scandinavia @ your Library

By Will Richter, Reference Librarian

Grand Rapids Area Library hosts Sara Pajunen and Vidar Skrede performing music of Scandinavia on Tuesday evening, July 18 at 6:00 p.m. at the library. The program is open to the public free of charge.

As a newly formed group called The Newlands Co-op, Pajunen and Skrede play traditional music from Finland and Norway as well as original compositions inspired by their Scandinavian heritage. The duo uses fiddles, guitar, voice, and hardingfele to create their traditional yet unique sound.

Vidar Skrede is from Haugesund, Norway and holds a Master’s degree in Nordic folk music from the Royal Academy in Stockholm. Sara Pajunen is a native of Hibbing, MN and combines classical music training with the music of her Finnish heritage. She was the 2015-16 Finlandia Foundation Performer of the Year.  She has gained a local following having performed in other Grand Rapids area venues in recent years.

The Newlands Co-op, just months old, has toured the U.S. east coast twice, and is excited to share their music on a summer tour of the Mesabi Iron Range. More information about the duo is available online at www.thenewlandscoop.com

Major OverDrive Upgrade: Libby

“Libby” is the new, innovative mobile app available to access OverDrive, the Grand Rapids Area Library’s e-book platform. Libby is designed to make borrowing and enjoying e-books and audiobooks from the library easier than ever.

Libby provides intuitive navigation of the OverDrive e-book and audiobook lending system and a streamlined first time user experience. The borrowing and downloading process has been simplified, and a unified bookshelf automatically displays all of your loans and holds.

Library customers may use Libby in place of, or in addition to, the OverDrive app. Patrons may also use the OverDrive app exclusively, if they wish. Any e-books and audiobooks that you borrow through the OverDrive app or the library’s web site will show up in Libby.

Libby can be installed from the Apple App Store or Google Play as a free app. It is currently compatible with iOS 9 or higher and Android 4.4 or higher.
